The Giakanja Coffee Factory is a prominent washing station and wet mill located in Nyeri County, Kenya. Its 1870 members consist of smallholder farms spread throughout the county, who grow the coffee primarily on small family plots at an altitude of 1750-1800 MASL. The relatively mild temperatures (55-78 degrees Fahrenheit) as well as the deep, well-drained volcanic soil provide an ideal coffee-growing landscape. When a harvest is ready for processing, Giakanja's members deliver their coffee cherries to the factory where they are pulped, fermented, washed, and soaked before being slowly dried on raised tables. Giakanja Coffee Factory works to support its members beyond just processing coffee cherry. They also provide members with insight on best farming practices, offer funding advances for school fees and emergency services, certify coffee seedlings, and provide transportation of the coffee to the mill. The long-term goal of Giakanja is to increase coffee production through farmer education on sustainable agricultural practices, such as planting trees on the farms and separating waste water pits away from primary water sources used for agricultural irrigation. To incentivize producers to improve their farming practices, and thereby improve the quality of coffee overall, Giakanja Coffee Factory pay some of the highest returns in the industry.
