Story

This coffee is brought to us from La Bastilla Coffee Estates in Jinotega, Nicaragua. Known as the "City of Mists," Jinotega features a near continuous stream of clouds over the valley in which it sits. The cool climate and rich volcanic soil conditions help to create an ideal coffee-growing environment. La Bastilla Coffee Estates grows and produces over a dozen different varietals on approximately 165 hectares of land. They pride themselves on being one of the only coffee estates in Nicaragua with full control over their supply chain, meaning they grow, harvest, process, and export all of their own crops, allowing for a high level of quality and transparency through the whole supply chain. Only about half of the 300-hectare estate is dedicated to coffee growth and production. Some of the remaining land is occupied by a school, which serves children of the estate's workers as well as children from the surrounding community, and offers primary, secondary, as well as technical education courses. In addition to a school, the estate features a forest and wildlife preserve that works to maintain populations of dozens of species of native trees, birds, and other wild animals. La Bastilla Estate earned a Rainforest Alliance Certification in 2003 and has maintained this status ever since. We are proud to bring you this offering from a producer that takes such great care to not only produce exceptional coffee but also to provide support for their community and natural environment. Enjoy!
