Story

La Morena is produced by female farmers from Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Huehuetenango is one of Guatemala's three non-volcanic regions, as well as its highest and driest under cultivation, making it one of the best for coffee production. Being such a unique climate, Huehuetenango offers some of the most complex and juicy coffees and is considered one of the highest quality producers of coffee in Guatemala. Our Guatemala export partner, Peter Schoenfeld, identified this project due to the gender equity gap in coffee farming where between 20% and 30% of coffee farms are female-operated and up to 70% of labor is provided by women, despite systemically lower access to resources, land, and credit. Often times this results in a gender gap in economic outcomes, such as yields, productivity and farm income. Schoenfeld was able to provide technical training on healthy farming practices to improve crop quality and yields through the Volcafe Way model farm program. This is our first year offering La Morena, and we are very excited for their debut to showcase the work of women farmers across Guatemala.
