Manuel and Patricia Montero work our plantations from plant to bag. Manuel is a third-generation coffee grower, and Patricia, Manuel’s wife is a New Jersey – Costa Rica transplant. They have two children and a grandson, and we value our family relationships above everything else.
The Montero’s value the use of no herbicides or pesticides. They constantly monitor their plantations for pest invasion and allow natural predators (birds, lizards, and mammals) to control pests for them. All weeding is done manually. They also terrace their plantations to help control drainage. Besides these things, the Montero’s also implement the use of fruit and native trees to create a proper shade/sun ratio to control soil moisture and leaf litter to benefit soil health.
Montero Specitalty’s vision is, “To build sustainable, long-term relationships with roasters, micro-roasters, and coffeehouses who share our passion for the highest-quality coffee, Mother Earth and social justice”.
