The Muungano Cooperative is located on the western shores of Lake Kivu near the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. The cooperative is comprised of roughly 4,400 smallholder farmers with nearly half of these farmers being women. The co-op focuses on gender justice and ethnic harmony. These core values are reflected in the cooperative's name, which means "togetherness" in the Swahili language. Muungano was founded in 2009 and has grown from milling coffee on early twentieth-century technology to now having two new washing stations, a new cupping lab, and a trained roaster and cupper on staff. Producing sweet, bright and complex coffees, the fruits of their hardwork are evident with these advancements. The cooperative continues to strive for excellence, and their hard work and dedication to their craft are reflected in this fantastic coffee offering.
