Muxbal Estate is a 236-hectare farm located in the mountains of Mexico bordering Guatemala. With a long winding road that leads up to the mountain-top location, Muxbal Estate gets its name from the Mayan phrase meaning "place surrounded by clouds". Since 2006, Muxbal Estate has been Rainforest Alliance certified and enjoys its status as a protected ecological reserve that consists not only of coffee crops, but also rainforest, rivers, springs, and an abundant and diverse selection of flora and fauna. The history of Muxbal as a coffee farm goes back far before 2006. In fact, its history can be traced back to the late 1700s when the region was still a part of Guatemala. Over time, ownership of the farm moved through several families before it was purchased by Enrique Rodriguez, the father of the current owner Maeggi Rodriguez. Today the farm is run by Maeggi and her two sons, Jorge and Juan Pablo. On the property is a school for the children of workers, including those seasonal workers who arrive just for the harvest. Housing for all employees is also provided, plus a communal kitchen that feeds them all. Two years ago they were able to develop their honey and natural process lots. They have built raised drying beds and a parabolic dryer to experiment with processing. Earlier this summer we offered a honey process lot from Muxbal Estate. For fall, we are excited to offer this washed process lot for you to enjoy.
