Sítio Maranhão is a 3-hectare family farm located in Caldas, started by Edivair and Luciane de Carvalho in 2008. A smaller farm by Brazilian standards, located at a higher altitude, along the volcanic belt and mild climate, where the coffee is picked by hand or using mechanical "arms" to shake the trees of cherries of varying degrees of ripeness. As a family, they are meticulous about the selection, processing, and drying of their coffee, producing 100% natural processed coffees. They won first place in the Especialissimo program in 2021, a cupping competition of specialty coffee held by SMC exporters. The recognition of their hard work in specialty coffee was very rewarding and incentivized them to make improvements to the farm, including building raised beds for their coffee. During our visit in 2024, they kindly asked us to walk around the perimeter of the drying patio so we would not contaminate the drying coffee. We knew immediately that this would be a wonderful coffee.
