STORY

Sítio Maranhão is a three-hectare family farm in Caldas, Brazil, founded by Edivair and Luciane de Carvalho in 2008. Though modest in size by Brazilian standards, the farm benefits from high elevation, volcanic soils, and a mild climate that create ideal conditions for producing exceptional coffee.

Coffee cherries are harvested either by hand or with mechanical shaker arms that gently remove cherries at varying stages of ripeness. As a family-run operation, the de Carvalhos bring a remarkable level of care and attention to each stage of production, from cherry selection through processing and drying. The farm produces exclusively 100% natural-processed coffees, allowing the fruit to dry intact around the seed.

Their dedication to quality earned significant recognition in 2021, when they won first place in the Especialíssimo Program, a specialty coffee cupping competition organized by SMC Exporters. The award affirmed their commitment to producing exceptional coffee and inspired further investment in the farm, including the construction of raised drying beds to refine and enhance their processing.

When we visited Sítio Maranhão in 2024, Edivair and Luciane politely asked us to walk around the perimeter of the drying patio to avoid contaminating the coffee as it dried beneath the sun. It was a small but meaningful detail—one that reflected the extraordinary care and pride they bring to every lot they produce. It’s this thoughtful approach to every stage of production that continues to distinguish the coffees of Sítio Maranhão.
