STORY

Nestled in the secluded hills of Burundi’s Muyinga Province, the producers of Hafi Coffee craft vibrant, complex natural coffees that reflect the dedication, ingenuity, and resilience of their community.

Our export partner, JNP Coffee, travels more than six hours from Bujumbura to visit the Hafi producers. With no washing station nearby, farmers would traditionally spend an entire day transporting freshly harvested coffee cherries for processing. In response to this challenge, the producers developed an innovative natural anaerobic fermentation method. Whole coffee cherries are enclosed for 24–48 hours before being transferred to raised beds, where they slowly sun-dry over the course of several weeks.

This thoughtful approach to processing results in a vibrant, plush, and deeply complex natural coffee with remarkable character, showcasing both the quality of the coffee and the care behind its production.

In Kirundi, “Hafi” means “close” or “near.” The name reflects the producers’ hope of one day having a washing station closer to their community.

Our relationship with JNP Coffee extends across several harvests. We’ve proudly featured their Turihamwe coffee on our menu for many years and have sourced Hafi for the past two harvests, including its appearance in last year’s Wonderblend. This year, we’re excited to highlight Hafi on its own, giving this distinctive coffee and the producers behind it an opportunity to take center stage.
