STORY

Nestled near the base of Poás Volcano in Costa Rica’s lush West Valley, Hacienda Sonora is a remarkable 100-hectare estate owned and operated by father-and-son team Alberto and Diego Guardia. For more than a decade, the Guardia family has been a valued part of the Costa Rican specialty coffee community, and we’ve had the privilege of sourcing their exceptional coffees for over ten years.

Of the estate’s 100 hectares, 55 are dedicated to coffee, 10 to sugar cane, and 35 to protected natural forest. This commitment to preserving the land creates a thriving ecosystem where wild vegetation, abundant biodiversity, and nutrient-rich volcanic soils surround and nourish the coffee trees.

Sustainability is at the heart of the Guardia family’s approach. Hacienda Sonora produces all of its coffees using Honey and Natural processing methods, significantly reducing water consumption. Honey processing saves approximately three gallons of water per pound of coffee, while Natural processing requires no water at all.

This thoughtful approach produces coffees that reflect both the remarkable terroir of Poás and the Guardia family’s dedication to responsible farming, innovation, and exceptional craftsmanship.

Last year, we were delighted to welcome Diego Guardia to our roastery and cafés, where he spent time with our team, shared his knowledge, and talked all things specialty coffee. His visit made our long-standing partnership even more meaningful, and we’re proud to continue sharing the remarkable coffees of Hacienda Sonora year after year.
