Located in Lourdes de Naranjo in Costa Rica’s West Valley, Finca Sumava de Lourdes is a remarkable 68-hectare farm led by renowned producer Francisco A. Mena. Situated at 1,650–1,750 MASL, the farm cultivates a diverse range of exceptional coffee varieties, including SL-28, Caturra, Gesha, Villa Sarchi, and Starmaya.
Harvesting at Finca Sumava is meticulous and highly organized, with each harvest carefully separated by plot, variety, and picking day. Only perfectly ripe cherries are selected. Following harvest, the cherries are placed in large plastic tanks to begin the pre-fermentation process before being transferred to raised beds or covered patios for drying.
This particular lot is a naturally processed Starmaya, offering a lush, floral, juicy, and sweet cup profile. Starmaya is a newer F1 hybrid coffee variety created by crossing Marsellesa with an Ethiopia/Sudanese landrace variety. It combines strong productivity and cup quality with resistance to Coffee Leaf Rust.
For more than 20 years, Francisco Mena has been a pioneer of Costa Rica’s micro-mill revolution. He is also the founder of Exclusive Coffee, our trusted export partner for the past six years.
Finca Sumava has been on our wishlist of Reserve coffees for several years, making this an especially meaningful addition to our Reserve collection. We are thrilled to finally share this distinctive coffee from a celebrated farm and producer.
