STORY

Nestled in the renowned coffee-growing region of Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia, Reko Washing Station was established with a clear mission: to elevate the quality of coffee produced in the surrounding communities. Situated at elevations ranging from 1,820 - 2,000 MASL, the station works with approximately 850 smallholder farmers cultivating traditional Ethiopian heirloom coffee varieties.

The washing station takes its name from nearby Reko Mountain, a striking landmark that rises above the surrounding landscape. Derived from the Afaan Oromo word for "challenge," Reko reflects both the mountain's difficult ascent and the dedication required to produce exceptional coffee.

During the harvest season, typically spanning late October through mid-January, local farmers deliver carefully selected, ripe coffee cherries to the station. The cherries are washed using water from a nearby river before being pulped with a traditional Agard pulping machine. The coffee then undergoes a 36–48-hour fermentation process to remove the remaining mucilage, followed by 10–12 days of careful drying on raised African beds. This meticulous washed process highlights the clarity and complexity characteristic of the region's finest coffees.

Through its commitment to quality and collaboration, Reko Washing Station has become an influential presence in the local coffee community, setting an example for neighboring producers and washing stations.
