Guatemala Pulcal

Guatemala Pulcal is a top selection of coffees from Hacienda Carmona, a historic farm located in Guatemala’s renowned Antigua growing region. Owned by Maria Zelaya Aguirre, Hacienda Carmona was originally purchased in 1910 by Maria’s grandfather, Mr. Luis Pedro Aguirre, and has since grown to 112 hectares. Temple established its partnership with the farm in 2024.

Situated between 1,600 and 1,900 meters above sea level, Hacienda Carmona grows Bourbon, Caturra, Villa Sarchi, and Catuai varieties. Beautifully ripe coffee cherries are carefully hand-picked, pulped at the farm’s wet mill, and washed before being dried at Hacienda Carmona. Today, the farm is managed by Ricardo Zelaya and Luis Pedro Zelaya, who continue the family’s longstanding commitment to exceptional coffee production. The farm also raises Holstein cattle for the dairy industry.

During our most recent visit, we witnessed coffee pickers carefully hand-sorting their daily harvest to remove any cherries that were not a perfectly uniform, deep-red ripe color. This extra step is extremely time-consuming and rarely practiced, but it exemplifies the farm’s extraordinary commitment to quality.

That meticulous attention to detail results in the deep sweetness that is a defining characteristic of this exceptional Pulcal offering. Fans of our Guatemala Hunapu will find much to appreciate in this thoughtfully produced coffee from Hacienda Carmona.
