Kenya Rianjagi

The Riangagi Cooperative Society is located in Ngandori East, Mutunduri, Embu County, within Kenya’s renowned Mount Kenya coffee-growing region. Situated at an elevation of 1,600 meters above sea level, the cooperative benefits from rich volcanic soils and an ideal climate for producing vibrant, high-quality washed coffees.

Established in 1976, the Riangagi Cooperative Society is made up of approximately 2,500 smallholder farmers, with women representing the majority of its members. Their deep knowledge of coffee cultivation and processing is reflected in the complex and expressive coffees they produce. Beyond their work as coffee producers, these women also play an essential role in managing their households and supporting the livelihoods of their families and communities.

Most Riangagi farmers cultivate small plots averaging approximately 0.2 hectares, with coffee serving as their primary source of income. Alongside coffee, they grow bananas, beans, potatoes, avocados, macadamia nuts, and mangoes to diversify their crops and strengthen food security. This approach provides nutritious food for their families while creating additional sources of income beyond coffee.

Through generations of agricultural knowledge and a thoughtful approach to diversified farming, the producers of Riangagi continue to cultivate exceptional coffees while supporting the long-term sustainability of their farms, families, and surrounding community.
