STORY
Wonder /ˈwəndər/ n. – a feeling of surprise mingled with admiration, caused by something beautiful, unexpected, unfamiliar, or inexplicable (Oxford Dictionary)
Wonderblend /ˈwəndərblend/ n. – A coffee blend that evokes a sense of wonder and awe, brought on by the whimsical, vibrant, and extraordinary combination of remarkably unique coffees (Temple Coffee Roasters)
Wonderblend is our perennial seasonal blend with fresh, popping flavors, first introduced in 2021. Each year, we create a playful blend from some of our favorite coffee origins, bringing together exceptional coffees that challenge expectations and celebrate the diversity of specialty coffee. The three coffees featured in this year's blend showcase innovative approaches to natural processing, including extended fermentation, producing wild, expressive, and intensely fruit-forward flavors. While these coffees display remarkable fermentation character, they are not co-fermented. Each component is an exceptional specialty coffee that we have previously featured as a single origin and have now brought together in one extraordinary blend.
Wonderblend also draws inspiration from one of coffee's oldest and most celebrated blends: Mocha Java. Traditionally combining coffees from Yemen and Java, Mocha Java highlighted the bold character of naturally processed coffees long before modern specialty coffee existed. If you remember your first cup of Ethiopian Harar or Arabian Mocha Sanai from Yemen, Wonderblend may evoke a similar sense of discovery while showcasing a modern expression of these classic coffee traditions.
This year's Wonderblend brings together three remarkable coffees from producers who are deeply committed to quality and innovation.
India Gundikhan comes from Gundikhan Estate in the Chikmagalur district, where producer Saif Ulla cultivates coffee at an impressive 1,300 MASL near the Bhadra Tiger Reserve. As a member of the KaadKaapi Collective, Saif is passionate about preserving native tree diversity and wildlife while meticulously producing coffees that showcase India's exceptional potential for naturally processed arabica.
From the volcanic Kintamani highlands of Bali, Wonderblend features coffee produced by the Subak Abian cooperatives, organizations founded on the Hindu philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, or the "three causes of happiness." Coffee is grown alongside citrus trees in the fertile volcanic soils surrounding Mount Agung, and what began as an innovative response to local water scarcity has evolved into a celebrated natural processing tradition that produces vibrant, expressive, and full-bodied coffees.
Completing the blend is Java Mt. Ijen, a natural anaerobic processed coffee produced by brothers Kenny and Kevin Soewondo of Kevenka Coffee in partnership with 300–500 smallholder farmers across East Java's volcanic highlands. Inspired to move beyond Indonesia's commercial coffee sector, the Soewondo brothers focus on meticulous processing and quality control while honoring Java's centuries-old coffee heritage with an expressive, modern approach.
Together, these three coffees showcase the exciting possibilities of modern natural processing, where thoughtful experimentation unlocks vibrant and unexpected flavor experiences. From carefully crafted natural and anaerobic fermentations to innovative processing methods developed in response to local environments, each coffee contributes its own unique character to the blend. The result is a sparkling, effervescent cup bursting with notes of strawberry wine, cherry candy, and gooseberry, a whimsical expression of the adventurous spirit that defines Wonderblend.
We hope you enjoy this year's Wonderblend, arriving just in time for summer.
