Pink Bourbon

Green hills with coffee plants

This month, for the first time, Temple Coffee is proud to offer a Colombian Pink Bourbon coffee. As this variety has become extremely popular in the specialty coffee world in recent years, we thought it would be a good time to spotlight this exquisite coffee, talk a little about varieties, and what makes this particular coffee stand out.

Within the species of Coffea Arabica (which makes up about 75% of the coffee cultivated), there are well over a 100 different varieties that we know of, not counting countless mutations and cross pollinations. So why would coffee producers/roasters/consumers prefer one variety over another? While how the coffee is grown, processed, and roasted all affect the final cup, certain varieties can be identified as having a higher quality, which includes a more dynamic and complex taste, aroma, and body.

Pink Bourbon is currently one of the most highly regarded coffee varieties in the world. Reviews often reference silky bodies, floral aromas, and bright, fruity, acidic notes. It has become a staple in national and world Barista Competitions, including one used by the 2023 Champion, Boram Um, with a Brazilian Pink Bourbon grown on his family's farm. When compared with Gesha, another lauded specialty variety, Pink Bourbon has a fuller, smoother body. It is less tea like, while still offering a complex and nuanced cup.

Our Pink Bourbon comes from Colombia, where it was first discovered in 2014. On the table, our team found it to have all the intricacies one would hope for in a Pink Bourbon. The delicate aroma of jasmine wafting up from the cup, the bright, crisp acidity of a sweet pink grapefruit and a fruity sweetness reminiscent of honeydew melon. The whole Temple team is ecstatic to share this exceptional coffee with you and introduce you to the joy of Pink Bourbon!
